Avenel, NJ: After a couple down seasons, the Colonia football team was back in a big way in 2021.

The Patriots went 8-3 in the rigorous Big Central Conference, and lost a close game in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 semifinals to eventual North Jersey, Group 4 champion Irvington.

So there is some optimism around the program heading into this summer, especially for the underclassmen, who get a chance to continue this build.

Enter Class of 2024 wide receiver /safety Titobiloluwa Popoola.

The sophomore has a big opportunity to step into the lineup in the fall, with a host of graduating players departing on both sides of the ball.

Popoola is 5-10, 155-pounds, and is expected to continue growing over the off-season and summer in the Patriots’ strength and conditioning program. He looks to be slotted in on both sides of the ball, and could be a breakout player in the Big Central.

Here is a quick scouting report on the sophomore:

“The 2021 Colonia team was senior-laden, so Popoola had some limited playing experience. But he did get a chance to be around a winning culture, and that should prove to be valuable heading into 2022.

“Popoola has good speed, and is working on getting stronger in the weightroom. I think that 5-10, 155-pound frame can grow over the next couple years, and he has a chance to become a big-time receiver if he puts in the work. I am definitely interested to see what Popoola can do in the lineup this fall: I think there is a real opportunity for him to break out.”

In the classroom, Popoola has a 3.3 GPA, and that number is expected to rise in the next few semesters as he continues to work towards the next level.
