Howell, NJ: Standing at 5-11 and weighing in at 240 pounds, Jaxson Campese has all the physical abilities to play in the trenches where he toils at center and defensive tackle for the Howell Rebels (4-4).
Backed by a strong work ethic, his relentless work in the weight room will increase his size and strength, which should increase his chances of playing at the next level.
The Rebels, who have always been a high-scoring club with an explosive aerial attack that competes in the Shore Conference, rely on their offensive line heavily, so the scouts are paying close attention.
Just recently, Campese drew some attention from Muhlenberg College, a Division 3 school in Pennsylvania.
At 16 years old, Campese has a strong work ethic, so Muhlenberg is just the first of many schools expected to be knocking on his door, especially as his size increases.
Scouting report: "Campese has worked hard to become a complete two-way lineman. He has solid foot work and is strong, which enables him to compete against bigger players. A lot of Howell's game, especially with its passing attack, requires big, strong, athletic players up front and Campese is filling that bill.
"Howell has scored on plenty of short yardage plays on the goal-line, mainly because of Campese's quickness once the ball is snapped. Only a junior, his work ethic will allow him to get bigger and stronger, which he will need to compete at the next level.''
Football scouts love multiple sport athletes to gage athletic ability, so Campese will be seen on the wrestling mat as well for the Rebels this winter. As a sophomore, Campese split time on the JV and varsity at 215 pounds and heavyweight for Howell, which finished 22-5 and advanced to the NJSIAA Group 5 final.
